Vogelzang and Matteson given Seven Lights Award from Sigma Chi

In 1977, when Alpha Upsilon Rush Chairman and Magister Dan Vogelzang pledged a kid named Matt Matteson, imagine telling them that 50 years later they’d both win the coveted Sigma Chi Seven Lights award for “alumni brothers who have provided a decade or more of exceptional volunteer service to the fraternity.”

It all came true on June 19th when Matteson and Vogelzang were publicly announced as Alpha Upsilon’s newest Seven Lights recipients.

Vogelzang (AU 1978) and Matteson (AU 1981) are being celebrated as members “who have “made a lasting impact at the local, provincial, or international levels,” the award reads.

“I am truly honored and blessed to receive the Seven Lights Award,” says Vogelzang. “For me to be recognized for this award is humbling.”

“I was both surprised and honored to receive the Seven Lights Award from the Fraternity,” says Matteson. “I have been humbled by and very grateful to learn of the efforts of a number of Brothers to secure this award on my behalf. “

There will be a celebration later this summer to recognize Vogelzang and Matteson with details announced at www.trojansig.com

Vogelzang and Matteson have both been deeply involved in Sigma Chi volunteerism for many years. As an alumnus, Vogelzang has headed the Trojan Sig House Corporation as well as serving on the Alumni Advisory Board and the Trojan Sig Foundation. He also founded and has organized the annual alumni-undergraduate networking and mentoring event among other roles.

“My service and dedication to, and for, Sigma Chi and my Alpha Upsilon chapter, as an undergrad and alum, has been because I do it for the love of both,” says Vogelzang. He is impressed with what Alpha Upsilon alums have done. “To achieve what we have could not be accomplished unless all of us are moving in the same direction with the same vision. I could not be prouder of my brothers who serve alongside me.”

Like many Sig alums, Matteson fell away from fraternity volunteering until years later in his life. “Gaining an unexpected ‘second chance’ to immerse myself in efforts for the Fraternity alongside these men has been exciting, fulfilling, and inspirational,” says Matteson. “It is not surprising to me that the men I met at Alpha Upsilon, the bond we formed, and the Sigma Chi principles we embraced remain of utmost importance to me today.”

The Judge Vic Person receives Significant Sig award at 26 Grand Chapter

The Alpha Upsilon brother we call "The Judge," Victor Person, received his Significant Sig medal and pin at 2025 Sigma Chi Grand Chapter in Denver on June 28th.

Vic adds new luster to the impressive list of Significant Sigs from USC. See below for just some of them.

Judge Victor Persón, ‘68

“When I joined Sigma Chi in 1964, the Chapter House there was virtually brand new and had a character of warmness and welcoming atmosphere, something that enhanced the experience of brotherhood.  In recent years it has become clear that a newer, larger, modern amenity filled Chapter House will serve the fraternity for at least and other 50-60 years in the future and help attract our Brothers of the future.  I want Sigma Chi to remain the strongest fraternity at USC and decided that I wanted to be a significant part of that legacy by supporting the Four Pillars Capital Campaign and donating to a new Chapter House.” Judge Victor Persón, ‘68

AND THE WINNER IS....

Alpha Upsilon

Alpha Upsilon was recently in the national spotlight again after four of our chapter mates were honored with Significant Sig medals at Grand Chapter for the induction of the class of 2020 and 2021. They are actor Patrick Muldoon, Order of Constantine Sig Gene Erbestosser, political heavyweight Sandy Quinn and Sigma Chi Foundation Board of Governors Vice Chair Jeff Gill. Congratulations!

Since the very founding of our chapter all those year ago, Alpha Upsilon has been honored with so many great achievements and its brothers have received so many accolades. Humility and grace permeate our legacy.
